Rome – a museum without walls. This city so rich in history offers so much to see and do that you could easily spend your whole vacation in this one Italian center.
Some of the sights and wonders you will find in Rome include:
The Colesseum
Capable of holding 60,000 people, the Colesseum is the largest amphitheatre ever built in the Roman Empire. It was home to the gladiatorial combats, so popular in its day.
Roman Forum
The Roman Forum is the oldest part of the city of Rome. Ancient Roman civilization developed around it. Over the years it served as the place where the citizens of Rome could gather in great number for political, judical and religious gatherings. It became the economic hub of the city.
The Pantheon
A temple ‘to all the gods’ of ancient Rome. All these years late, the dome of the Pantheon remains the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome.
Rome’s history spans over two and a half thousand years, having been a major political and cultural influence.
Catacombs
Located in or around Rome are at least 40 underground burial places called catacombs. These date back to the second century when the persecuted Christians needed a place to bury their dead.
Fountains and Aqueducts
For over two-thousand years Rome has had fountains throughout the city that have been a source of water. As you view the the carefully crafted Baroque styled sculptures surrounding the monumental fountains, you will notice that the water is used to accentuate them.
Statues
Rome is known for it’s statues. There are what they call the ‘talking statues’, ancient statues that have become places for people to voice their opinion. These are often covered with graffiti and placcards. There are also ‘non-talking’ statues. Most of the statues depict ancient and legendary people or mythical gods.
Obelisks and Columns
Throughout the city you will find ancient obelisks and columns, as well as some more modern obelisks to add to your picture collection.
Parks and Gardens
If you find that you need a moment to get back to nature, you’ll have ample opportunity in Rome, as amongst the European capital cities, Rome has one of the largest green space areas.
The Vatican City
Did You Know: The Sistine Chapel was painted by Michelangelo
Known as the residence of the Pope, the Vatican city is also where you will find St. Peter’s Basilica, the Apostolic Palaces, museums and the Sistine Chapel.
These are just a few of the sight-seeing attractions. Creating memories won’t be a problem, you’ll just be disappointed that there isn’t enough time to see it all.
