Tips For A Positive Travel Experience

Whenever I have travel scheduled, whether it be for business or pleasure, there are a few tips I like to follow to make my trip a little better. It doesn’t matter if I’m going to the other side of the world or the other side of town things will never be quite the same as they are at home. Follow these tips and you’ll have a great trip and just might learn a thing or two.

1. Don’t compare anyplace you visit to home. Home will always win. That’s why it’s your home. Unless you really dislike your location one of the greatest joys in travelling is coming back home. However while you’re away making constant comparisons to where you came from will make your trip a lot less enjoyable.

2. Seek out those things you can’t get at home. It doesn’t have to be some delicacy from a far off land.

Part of the fun of traveling is getting to see how others live.  So to make the most of your trip, try leaving your own ‘ways’ at home and join in the ‘ways’ of the places you’re visiting to really have a greater experience and appreciation of other cultures.
Different regions and even different towns and villages can have something unique to offer. Take the time to branch out. You never know what you’ll find.

3. Never forget anyplace you’re visiting is somebody else’s home. Treat it with respect. This is usually a problem in big tourist locations. Every year people will come to a town, throw down lots of money and make a mess of the place. That’s why visitors to these places get a bad reputation and thus terms like “Stupid Tourists” get coined. Follow the rules of common courtesy and think how you like your home to be treated. Also taking some time to brush up on the local culture will help you know what is acceptable and what isn’t.

4. Get off the beaten path. At least briefly. Look or where the locals eat, or shop. It can be hard in the big tourist areas but if you ask around many locals will be glad to share things about their city.

5. Immerse yourself. Especially if visiting an entirely new culture. Don’t be afraid to talk with people and ask about a particular event, food, or drink. Chances are there is a very interesting history behind it that locals will love to share. Don’t worry if you get the “My food, drink, event is better than yours talk”.

Remember that traveling is a chance to experience something new, so engage the locals of the area you are visiting to really have a more in-depth view of life in that area.
Most are very proud of their culture and may think it is the best thing going. Just listen and be willing to learn something new and you’ll enjoy your trip a lot more.

I’m sure there are a lot of other good tips out there that will make your travel experience a positive one. Let’s get a list going. Leave us a comment for all to read.
